Media Representation & Race

There remains a white hierarchy when it comes to the disproportionate representation of race within organizations. Sartore and Cunnigham (2006) admit that it has been well documented that whites have historically dominated the sports industry in both ownership and in head coaching. The lack of minorities in media coverage on these topics is glaring.

Sports constitute a major part of the US economy and it is a large part of our society, considering the amount of money paid for creating sports recreation centers. Representation of sports within the media is usually focused on money, entertainment, and statistics. Washington and Karen (2001) argue that there needs to be a deeper understanding of this industry, activity, market, field considering the time it takes up on the average person’s weekend.
