Vaccine resistance may not be new, but conspiracy theories surrounding the covid vaccine during the pandemic on social platforms like twitter were popular. Although opposition to vaccines has been persisted since vaccines were invented (Husain et al. 2018) it seemed as though sites spreading misinformation(Ahmed et al. 2020 B), which typically spread such misinformation were getting a lot more attention at this time than ever before.

The 5G Vaccine Theory specifically seemed to gain the concentration of many individuals. The 5G theory basically suggested that the implementation 5G towers were related to the COVID-19 outbreak, as people believed the virus was being radiated through the cell towers, so companies handling this technology can maintain large profits (Ahmed et al. 2020 A).

Although considering the fact that 5G stands for 5th generation technology while COVID-19 is a disease, the connection seems unlikely, the spread of this theory led to the burning of 5G towers in the United Kingdom by those who believed in the theory. 5G was a new chip for devices which widened the horizons for digital inclusion through support for a larger number of devices for any given network, yielding higher speeds and lower latency, those who believed in the theory thought the chip was in the vaccine (Sharp 2023). Vaccine resistance movements like those of the 5G Theory could put our society at risk of facing another lockdown.
