My final subtopic strongly correlates with what I think the answer to my research question will be and that is that gender norms of masculinity have a negative effect on male athletes. Two of these sources focus on the sport of competitive bodybuilding amongst males. Across many different fields, bodybuilding is seen as a pathology. A study found more reinforcements that mens bodybuilding is built upon gender stereotypes and tough masculinity. (Hefferman and Woznicki: 2022) Due to this foundation, past studies have shown that many competitive bodybuilders deal with issues of narcissism and personality disorders. (Carroll: 1989) Studies have also been done on NCAA athletes and it has been found that male athletes deal with more issues of mental toughness, lack self-compassion, and deal with more disorders.
