This research project used both basic and interpretive content analysis methods to answer the question:

HOW DOES PERCEIVED WEIGHT AFFECT AUDIENCE REACTIONS IN THE COMMENT SECTIONS OF FEMALE MUKBANG YOUTUBERS?

While this project examines the reactions of audiences on mukbang YouTubers specifically, it acts as a stepping stone for analyzing reactions that audiences have on women in other types of media as well. Conversations around weight have been ongoing for years, and while we have increasingly become more body-positive as a society, stigma and shame still exist toward larger women in media, as seen in this research. If we can understand the reactions and reasons behind this shame, we can use it to work towards a society that is safe and accepting for all women, regardless of their body type or food choices.

If we can create a more weight-accepting society, future generations will not have to deal with the social pressure that surrounds weight today. Future generations deserve the knowledge that the number on the scale does not determine their value. The findings of this research generally found that female mukbang YouTubers of larger body types are treated more harshly than those who are perceived as thin women by the audiences in their comment sections.
