The #MeToo movement was started by Tarana Burke in 2006 with the goal of helping women of color who were survivors of sexual assault. Burke herself is a woman of color, and her campaign did not receive significant media attention until it was used by prominent actress Alyssa Milano in 2017 (Leung & Williams 2019). Since then, more and more survivors of sexual violence from all walks of life have come forward about their experiences. Reporting of and discourse surrounding sexual violence has taken place in a variety of settings, including colleges, workplaces, Hollywood, and more.
