The nature of social movements has been strongly influenced by the advent of new technology, including the internet and social media. These have allowed for online activism that serves as a new tool for those working for social movements. One scholar argues that we have entered a new era of social movement theory because of the power of social media and major news outlets (Carty 2018). Linguistics in media have also evolved over time, and it is important to note the attitudes of speakers in relation to the language and other manifest content they use in reporting (Shuy 2012). However, there are still many silences and omitted voices within the #MeToo movement (Tambe 2018).
